So I think I've finally made my decision on who I'm going to be supporting in the Presidential elections next year. This is a decision I made after a lot of research, frustration, and serious debates with myself and others. I do think this person does have what I think the country needs right now though.
John Edwards is the man for the job. I agree with him on about 90% of his stances. However, there was one quote I read by him that really cemented my support for him:
"I am against the president's constitutional amendment on gay marriage...I don't personally support gay marriage myself. My position has always been that it's for the states to decide."" - 2/24/04
It's not specifically that he's pro-gay marriage that I liked, but the fact that he's personally willing to put his personal prejudices aside to do what he thinks is right for the country. I think Democrats are giving him a lot of shit for saying that he doesn't personally support gay marriage, but doesn't the fact that as a politician he says it shouldn't be outlawed pretty fucking noble? I think that's why we're in so much trouble right now - Bush only wanted to do what he thought was right, not what was right for the nation. Obviously politicians will have their own opinions about what's right and what's wrong (they're only human), but that's not necessarily what is right or wrong for the country. Sure, passion in your own beliefs is a good thing, but not when it means you're going to be so close minded as to not listen to everyone else.
